Spelman College, private institution of higher education, for women only, located in Atlanta, Georgia. The school was founded in 1881. The college confers bachelor’s degrees in a wide range of fields. It offers courses of study in the liberal arts, the arts and sciences, the fine arts, performing arts, computer science, engineering, and religious studies. A joint degree in engineering is offered in cooperation with Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, New York; the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia; and Boston University in Boston, Massachusetts. An Independent Major program allows students to create their own course of study under the supervision of two faculty advisors.

Research facilities at the college include the International Affairs Center, founded to “broaden and deepen” students’ understanding of global issues; and the Women’s Research and Resource Center, which focuses on women’s studies, community outreach, and research.
