Encyclopedia Article
Hanno (lived 530-470 BC), Carthaginian navigator who undertook a voyage of exploration along the west coast of Africa. He probably sailed as far as present-day Sierra Leone. When he returned to Carthage, he inscribed an account of his travels on a tablet that he deposited in the temple of the Phoenician god Moloch. The original narrative was composed in the Phoenician language; a Greek translation exists under the title Periplus (Voyage).
