Douglas is located on the eastern coast of the island, at the common mouth of the Dhoo and Glass rivers (from which the borough's name is derived), and is encircled by hills. The borough is the principal passenger and cargo port of the Isle of Man and is noted as a summer resort. Douglas also has some light industry. The Manx Museum here has a collection devoted to the archaeology and natural history of the island. Douglas began its growth as a resort in the mid-19th century. Population (2001 estimate) 23,000.
