Lohengrin

Lohengrin, hero of a popular German tale of Arthurian legend. Lohengrin was the son of Percival, one of the knights who accompanied Galahad on his successful quest for the Holy Grail, the sacred chalice that Jesus Christ drank from at the Last Supper. At the command of King Arthur, Lohengrin was taken by a swan-drawn boat to Antwerp, where he fought for a noble lady, Elsa of Brabant. Lohengrin married Elsa on the condition that she never ask his name or origin. Elsa broke her vow, however, and Lohengrin disappeared. The earliest written version of the legend was the epic Parzival, written in about 1210 by German poet Wolfram von Eschenbach. German composer Richard Wagner used a version of the tale as the subject of his opera Lohengrin (1850).
