Richard Montgomery

Richard Montgomery (1736-75), Anglo-American soldier, born in county Dublin, Ireland. He served with the British colonial army in America against the French from 1757 to 1772, when he settled in New York. At the outbreak of the American Revolution he was appointed a brigadier general in the American army and served under General Philip Schuyler on the expedition of 1775 against Canada. He captured Montréal but was killed leading an unsuccessful assault on Québec.
