Edmund Rubbra
Encyclopedia Article
Edmund Rubbra (1901-1986), British composer, noted as a leading symphonist and for his vocal and chamber works. Born in Northampton, Rubbra was largely self-taught musically but studied under Gustav Holst and, occasionally, Ralph Vaughn Williams. His frequently polyphonic style is lyrical and romantic, showing much concern for structure and counterpoint. His works include 11 symphonies and many choral compositions using liturgical texts.
