Field Museum, one of the most important natural science museums in the world and one of the largest public museums in the United States, located in Chicago. The museum has more than 19 million artifacts and specimens. Scientific research and educational programs about the earth's environments and cultures also take place at the museum. It was founded in 1893 with donations from many Chicago citizens, including American merchant Marshall Field, to create a permanent home for the collections assembled in Chicago for the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893. The original museum opened in 1894 in Jackson Park and was moved to its present building in Grant Park in 1921.
