Cornelis de Witt
Encyclopedia Article
Cornelis de Witt (1623-1672), Dutch naval officer, prominent in the struggle to make the Dutch States-General, or parliament, supreme over the ruling house of Orange. The elder brother of Jan De Witt, he was born in Dordrecht, became an alderman of the city in 1648, and was a burgomaster, or chief magistrate, in 1667 and 1668. He was a naval commander during the Anglo-Dutch Wars (1652-1654 and 1665-1667). In 1672, while imprisoned on charges of plotting against William III, prince of Orange, he and his brother were slain by a mob.
