Grand Manan Island

Grand Manan Island, island in southwestern New Brunswick, Canada, in the Bay of Fundy. The island is about 27 km (about 17 mi) from the New Brunswick mainland and about 13 km (about 8 mi) from the state of Maine in the United States. It has a maximum length of about 24 km (about 15 mi) and an area of 137 sq km (53 sq mi). The economy of the island is based chiefly on fishing, forestry, seaweed gathering, and summer tourism. Grand Manan Island is along a bird migration route. It is also a popular whale-watching spot. The principal settlements are North Head, Woodwards Cove, Grand Harbour, and Seal Cove. Grand Manan, settled in the late 18th century, was claimed by the United States until 1817.
