Institute for Advanced Study, institution for postdoctoral research in mathematics, theoretical physics and astrophysics, and historical science and the social sciences, located in Princeton, New Jersey. Established in 1930, the Institute for Advanced Study consists of schools of mathematics, historical studies and social sciences, and natural sciences. Approximately 160 eminent scholars from around the world are invited to the institute as visiting members to conduct research and study with the institute's 21-member permanent faculty. Emphasizing the general advancement of learning, the institute has no formal curriculum or schedule of courses. It is separate from, but maintains close ties with, Princeton University. Noted scientists and scholars who have served on the faculty at the institute include Albert Einstein, Kurt Gödel, John von Neumann, Erwin Panofsky, and J. Robert Oppenheimer.
