Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (1519-74), Spanish naval officer, founder of Saint Augustine, Florida. He became a sailor early in life and by 1554 was appointed captain of the Spanish Indies fleet. In 1565, he was charged by Philip II of Spain to expel the French Huguenot colony on Fort Caroline on the north Florida coast. Menéndez established a colony on Saint Augustine Bay and massacred the inhabitants of nearby Fort Caroline. He later explored the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.
