Mach Number
Encyclopedia Article
Mach Number, in aerodynamics and fluid mechanics, the ratio of the speed of an object, usually an airplane, through a fluid (gas or liquid) to the speed of sound in the fluid. The unitless Mach number was named after the Austrian physicist and philosopher Ernst Mach. An airplane traveling at less than Mach 1 is traveling at subsonic speeds; at about Mach 1, transonic, or approximately the speed of sound; and greater than Mach 1, supersonic speeds. An aircraft flying at Mach 2, for example, is traveling at twice (or 200 percent) the speed of sound.
