Black (river, Missouri and Arkansas), river, southeastern Missouri and northeastern Arkansas. It rises in the Ozark Mountains and flows generally south for 451 km (280 mi), joining the White River near Newport, Arkansas. Clearwater Lake on the river west of Piedmont, Missouri, is formed behind the Clearwater Dam, which was completed in 1948 as part of a flood-control project.
