Enderby Land
Encyclopedia Article
Enderby Land, semicircular projection, northeastern Antarctica, on the Indian Ocean coast between about longitude 50° and 60° east. It is claimed by Australia. Enderby Land was sighted in 1831 by a British whaler, John Biscoe, and named in honor of his employer Samuel Enderby, a London merchant. Between 1929 and 1931 a Britain-Australia-New Zealand expedition under Sir Douglas Mawson and a Norwegian expedition under Hjalmar Riiser-Larsen explored the region. The Mawson expedition outlined the coast eastward from Enderby Land to latitude 67° South and found evidence of more land to the east. Extensive hydrological, meteorological, and biological data were collected, and whaling ground was found.
