Isles of Scilly
Encyclopedia Article
Isles of Scilly or Scilly Islands, archipelago in southwestern England, in the Atlantic Ocean, part of the county of Cornwall, southwest of Land’s End. The group consists of about 140 small islands and rocks, with a total area of 16 sq km (6.2 sq mi). Only five of the islands are inhabited: Saint Mary's, Tresco, Saint Martin's, Saint Agnes, and Bryher. The islands are noted for their rugged granite cliffs and wild scenery. The mild climate permits cultivation, during the winter, of flowers and vegetables (particularly daffodils and potatoes), which are shipped to Bristol and London. The capital, Hugh Town, on St. Mary's, has a substantial harbor and offshore anchorage. Many ships have been wrecked on the rocky coasts of the islands. Population (2001) 2,153.
