Presidential Range, mountain range in northern New Hampshire, in the White Mountains. Eight of the 86 peaks in the scenic and forested Presidential Range bear the names of United States presidents—Adams, Eisenhower, Jackson, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Pierce, and Washington. Mount Washington, with an elevation of 1,917 m (6,288 ft), is the highest peak in the northeastern United States. Known for its extreme, changeable weather conditions, Mount Washington holds the record for the highest wind speed ever recorded—372 km/hr (231 mph)—on April 12, 1934.
