Encyclopedia Article
Erik Gunnar Asplund (1885-1940), Swedish architect, who led the International Style in Sweden. He combined an austere modernism with a lightness and delicacy derived from traditional Scandinavian architecture and from his own love of Greek classicism. His landmark works of the 1920s and '30s, such as the Woodland Crematorium chapel in Stockholm, laid the foundations of a school of Swedish architecture that influenced later styles in Europe and the United States.
