Mount Holyoke College, private institution of higher learning for women in South Hadley, Massachusetts, 17 km (11 mi) north of Springfield. In 1837 American educator Mary Lyon founded the school as the Mount Holyoke Female Seminary. The present name was adopted in 1893. The college is noted for its high academic standards, its commitment to strong relationships between faculty and students, and its emphasis on public service.

Courses leading to the bachelor’s degree are offered in the liberal arts and in the sciences. Master’s degrees are offered in biology, chemistry, education, and psychology. Mount Holyoke College is a member of the Five College Consortium that includes Smith College, Hampshire College, Amherst College, and the University of Massachusetts Amherst. Students may cross-register for courses at any of these institutions.

Graduates of Mount Holyoke College include playwright Wendy Wasserstein, winner of the 1989 Pulitzer Prize for drama.
