Tayside, former administrative region, eastern Scotland. Tayside was created in 1975 by the merger of the former counties of Angus and Kinross-shire with most of Perthshire. Tayside was dissolved in 1996 and divided into three new unitary authorities: Angus, City of Dundee, and Perth and Kinross. The former region is largely an agricultural area, notably in the south and east, where livestock is raised and crops are grown, including oats, potatoes, and fruits. The northern and western areas are mountainous and contain numerous lakes. Fishing and resort towns are located on the region's North Sea coast.
