Boston College, private, coeducational institution in Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, 10 km (6 mi) southwest of Boston. Founded in 1863 by the Jesuits, and affiliated with the Roman Catholic Church, the college was originally located in Boston’s South End. It moved to its present location in 1913.
Boston College confers bachelor’s, master’s, doctoral, and professional degrees in a broad range of fields. It has seven colleges and schools offering undergraduate programs. Courses of study include the arts and sciences, education, business administration and management, management information systems, physical sciences, health sciences, studio arts, and performing arts. A joint degree in engineering is offered in cooperation with Boston University. Research facilities at the college include the Center for the Study of Testing, Evaluation, and Educational Policy, the Social Welfare Research Institute, the Sonntag Cancer Research Institute, and the Weston Observatory.
