Conrad I
Encyclopedia Article
Conrad I (died 918), king of Germany (911-918). While he was duke of Franconia, Conrad was elected successor to the German king Louis III, the last of the Eastern Carolingian rulers. During his reign Conrad was constantly at war with the Slavs and the Magyars who were invading his realm. He also had a series of wars with the feudal dukes of his kingdom, notably with Henry the Fowler, duke of Saxony, who succeeded Conrad as Henry I. Unlike his predecessors, Conrad I never received the title Holy Roman emperor from the pope.
