Avon (region, England), former county, southwestern England. In 1996 Avon was dissolved and replaced by four unitary authorities: Bath and North-East Somerset, Bristol, South Gloucestershire, and North Somerset. The region is primarily agricultural, most of its industry being concentrated in Bristol. The area was occupied by the Romans in the 1st century ad, notably at Bath, and was later included in the kingdom of Wessex. Avon was formed in 1974 from parts of Somerset and Gloucestershire.
