Main (river, Germany), river, Germany, a major tributary of the Rhine River. It is formed by the union of the White and the Red Main rivers, near Kulmbach, in northeastern Bavaria. The Main flows west for 523 km (325 mi) and enters the Rhine opposite the city of Mainz. The most important city on the Main is Frankfurt.
