Lake Como
Encyclopedia Article
Lake Como, lake, northern Italy, in Lombardy (Lombardia). It fills a depression 198 m (650 ft) above sea level, in the limestone hills of the Bernina Alps, and is sometimes called Lake Lario, an adaptation of Lacus Larius, the ancient Roman name for the lake. The principal tributary of the lake, the Adda River, enters it at the northern end and leaves it at Lecco, at the southeastern extremity of the lake. The city of Como is at the southwestern end. From the northern end to the tip of either of the two arms of the lake it is 51 km (32 mi) long; it varies in width from 0.8 to 4 km (0.5 to 2.5 mi); and its maximum depth is about 410 m (1345 ft). The scenery around Lake Como and the climate make it an ideal place for vacationers. Area, 146 sq km (56 sq mi).
