Jean Gottmann (1915-1994), French geographer, born in what is now Ukraine, who originated the idea of the megalopolis to describe a large urbanized area. His first name Iona was changed to French Jean when his family moved to France. Gottmann analyzed civilization on both sides of the Atlantic, emphasizing the interplay of geography and urbanization in international relations. After studying at the Sorbonne in Paris, he served as a consultant to the Foreign Economic Administration in the United States from 1942 to 1944, and taught at Johns Hopkins University from 1943 to 1948. Gottmann's publications include A Geography of Europe (1950) and Megalopolis: The Urbanized Seaboard of the United States (1961).
