University of Alaska System, system of state-supported universities and colleges in Alaska, including more than 100 extension and research sites throughout the state. The school was originally known as the Alaska Agricultural College and School of Mines. It was authorized by the Congress of the United States in 1915 as a land-grant agricultural college, and established by the Alaska Territorial Legislature in 1917. The system includes the University of Alaska Fairbanks (founded in 1917) in Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Anchorage (1954) in Anchorage, and the University of Alaska Southeast (1972) in Juneau.
