Carl Ritter (1779-1859), German geographer, a founder of modern geographic study. He held the first academic chair in geography as professor at the University of Berlin from 1820 until the time of his death. Ritter stressed the importance of using all the sciences in the study of geography. His most important work, Die Erdkunde (Earth Science, 19 volumes, 1817-1859), emphasized the influence of the physical environment on human activity.
