University of Texas System, system of state-supported universities in Texas. More than 800,000 hectares (2 million acres) of land from the public domain in western Texas formed the basis of the university endowment, which is shared with Texas A&M University System. The University of Texas System includes the University of Texas at Arlington (founded in 1895) in Arlington, the University of Texas at Austin (1883) in Austin, the University of Texas at Brownsville (1973) in Brownsville, the University of Texas at Dallas (1969) in Richardson, the University of Texas at El Paso (1913) in El Paso, the University of Texas at San Antonio (1969) in San Antonio, the University of Texas at Tyler (1971) in Tyler, the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio (1976) in San Antonio, the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center (1943) in Houston, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (1891) in Galveston, the University of Texas of the Permian Basin (1969) in Odessa, the University of Texas-Pan American (1927) in Edinburg, the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas (1943) in Dallas, the University of Texas M. D. Anderson Cancer Center (1941) in Houston, and the University of Texas Health Center at Tyler (1977) in Tyler.
In August 2006 the Board of Regents of the university system announced an investment program of $2.65 billion to be plowed into science and technology provision at the university, including the construction of new laboratories across most of the university’s campuses. The investment includes resources from the state, as well as from donations and the university system’s endowment.
