Passacaglia, a 17th- and 18th-century dance in triple time, at first, in Spain, lively and risqué, but later tamed to a solemn French theatrical dance. It is also a musical form related to the chaconne and consisting of continuous variations on an ostinato (a phrase constantly repeated in any voice).
