Walden Pond, pond, northeastern Massachusetts, near Concord, made famous by the American author Henry David Thoreau, who built a cabin on its shore and lived there alone from 1845 to 1847. He described his experiment in self-reliance in a series of essays entitled Walden; or, Life in the Woods (1854).
