Swan (river, Australia)
Encyclopedia Article
Swan (river, Australia), river, southwestern Australia. Lying within the state of Western Australia, it rises in an area of hills and flows 390 km (240 mi) west past Perth to enter the Indian Ocean at Fremantle. The river, which is usually dry in summer, is known in its upper course as the Avon River. The lower course was explored in 1697 by a Dutch navigator who named it for the indigenous black swans.
