Henry Brockholst Livingston (1757-1823), son of the American statesman William Livingston, born in New York City, and educated at the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University). He was an army officer during the American Revolution and was secretary (1779) to his brother-in-law, John Jay, then president of the Continental Congress, on a diplomatic mission to Spain. After his return he studied law, practiced in New York City, and became first a judge of the state supreme court and then an associate justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, serving from 1806 to 1823.
