Brooklyn Academy of Music (BAM), performing arts center located in the borough of Brooklyn in New York City. Founded in 1861, the academy is the oldest facility of its kind in the United States. The academy focuses on presenting both traditional and contemporary performing arts, including dance from the United States and other countries, music, theater, musical theater, and opera. The academy is also the home of the Brooklyn Philharmonic Orchestra. The Next Wave Festival, begun in 1983, is a ten-week festival featuring works by both established and emerging artists.
