John Nash (architect) (1752-1835), English architect, the country's most prominent of the early 19th century. He worked in every style then popular, producing Gothic country mansions, stuccoed classical houses, Italianate villas, and semidetached townhouses. His Royal Pavilion at Brighton (1815-1823), one of the period's most original buildings, was an extravagant mixture of Chinoiserie and pure fantasy. His largest project was Regent St. and Regent's Park, London (begun 1812), which included a classical quadrant and grand residential terraces. He also designed Trafalgar Square in London and helped redesign Buckingham Palace.
