Evening Primrose
Encyclopedia Article
Evening Primrose, common name for a family of annual to perennial plants, native largely to temperate regions of the western hemisphere. The family is named for the nocturnal flowering members of one genus, particularly the common evening primrose. This plant, which reaches more than 1.2 m (4 ft) high, is a biennial with large yellow flowers. Others of this genus of about 200 species are also cultivated for their flowers, which range from white to purplish red. Day-blooming members are called sundrops. Fuchsia is another member of the family.
Scientific classification: Evening primroses make up the family Onagraceae. The common evening primrose is classified as Oenothera biennis.
