Encyclopedia Article
Guiana Highlands, also Guiana Massif or Guiana Shield, upland region developed on ancient rocks, northern South America. It extends from eastern Colombia, across southern Venezuela, northern Brazil, Guyana, Suriname, and into French Guiana in the east. The region, which receives heavy rainfall, is densely forested and contains a great variety of wildlife, especially birds. Mount Roraima (2,875 m/9,432 ft) is the loftiest point, and Angel Falls, the world's highest waterfall, where water drops 979 m (3212 ft), is also in the Guiana Highlands. Gold, diamonds, bauxite, and iron ore are mined here.
