Rashîd or Rosetta, city in northern Egypt, in Buhayrah (also called Béhéra) Governorate, near the Rosetta branch of the Nile River, close to the Nile's mouth. Rice growing, rice milling, fishing, and fish curing are principal industries. Established in the 9th century, Rashîd was a major port until the 19th century. The so-called Rosetta Stone, which provided the key to ancient Egyptian hieroglyphics, was found near the city in 1799. Population (1986) 52,014.
