Chapel Hill, residential town, Orange County, central North Carolina; incorporated 1851. It is the home of the main campus of the University of North Carolina, the oldest state-supported university in the country. Established in 1792, the community grew around the university; it is named for New Hope Chapel, which formerly stood on a hill at the center of the settlement. Population 32,421 (1980); 38,719 (1990); 48,715 (2000); 49,919 (2006).
