Tyne and Wear, metropolitan county, northeastern England; Newcastle upon Tyne is the administrative center. Bordered on the east by the North Sea and crossed by the Tyne and Wear rivers, the county is known for its extensive coalfields and the concentration of heavy industry. Major industrial centers include Newcastle upon Tyne, South Shields, and Sunderland. Tyne and Wear was created in 1974 from parts of Northumberland and Durham.
