Surakarta, city in southern Indonesia, on the island of Java, in Central Java Province, on the Solo River, at the confluence of the Dengkeng and Pepe rivers. A road and rail hub, it is the market for an area in which rice, sugarcane, rubber, grain, cassava, and indigo are grown. Industries in the city include textile milling, tanning, and the manufacture of machinery and batik. The city is the site of the walled palace of the sultan of Surakarta, Fort Vastenburg (1779), and old Dutch residences. The popular name of the city is Solo. Population (2007 estimate) 534,540.
