Herefordshire, unitary authority and former county, western England; Hereford was the county town. Herefordshire comprises an undulating lowland area, bordered on the east by the Malvern Hills. The region was occupied by the Saxons in the 7th century and became part of the kingdom of Mercia. As a region on the border with Wales, Herefordshire has remnants of many medieval fortifications. In 1974 Herefordshire became a part of the new county of Hereford and Worcester, but in 1998 the county was split and Herefordshire became a unitary authority.
