Southampton (New York), village, Suffolk County, southeastern New York, on the southern shore of Long Island on the Atlantic Ocean; settled 1640, incorporated 1894. With such communities as Amagansett, Bridgehampton, East Hampton, Hampton Bays, Quogue, Sag Harbor, and Westhampton Beach, it forms a popular summer seaside resort region. In the area are the Shinnecock Indian Reservation; the Parrish Art Museum, featuring displays of American, Asian, and European art; a historical museum; and Long Island University Southampton Center (1963). Population 4,000 (1980); 3,980 (1990); 3,965 (2000); 4,109 (2005 estimate).
