Aletsch, glacier, southern Switzerland, largest glacier of Europe, in the Alps. It is 20 km (12.5 mi) long and sweeps around the southern side of the Jungfrau in the Swiss Alps. At the eastern extremity lies a glacier lake, Märjelensee (2,350 m/7,711 ft above sea level). To the northwest rises Aletschhorn (4,195 m/13,763 ft), which was first climbed in 1859.
