Encyclopedia Article
Thomas Bowdler (1754-1825), English editor, born in Ashley, near Bath. In 1818 he published an edition of Shakespeare's works called The Family Shakespeare in which words and expressions are omitted “which cannot with propriety be read aloud in a family.” The work has added the word bowdlerism to the English language as a synonym for arbitrary expurgation. In 1822 Bowdler also edited parts of the Bible in the same manner.
