Daejeon

Daejeon, also Taejŏn, city in central South Korea. It became prominent as a road and rail hub for an area in which fruit and livestock were produced. Hot springs are nearby. Educational institutions in the city include Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (1971), Chungnam National University (1952), Daejeon University (1979), the Daejeon Health Sciences College (1977), and Daejeon Polytechnic College (1994). The city was known as Taiden under Japanese rule. Population (2006 estimate) 1,476,000.
