Teutoburg Forest
Encyclopedia Article
Teutoburg Forest or Teutoburger Wald, mountain range, northwestern Germany, extending for approximately 113 km (approximately 70 mi) from near Osnabrück to near Paderborn. In ad 9 the Teutoburger Wald was the scene of an important battle in which the Germans under Arminius destroyed three Roman legions under the general Publius Quintilius Varus (flourished 13 bc-ad9). As a result of the battle Rome lost all possessions east of the Rhine River, which became the northeastern boundary of the Roman Empire. The exact location of the battle is not known.
