Canvasback, common name for a North American diving duck, much esteemed as a table delicacy. Males have a reddish-brown head and neck, and their white upperparts have fine wavy, dusky markings. Females are dull brown. Both sexes have a sloping head profile that distinguishes them from the similar redhead. Canvasbacks nest on lakes and marshes from Alaska to Minnesota, and winter along the coasts and on large lakes from Alaska and New England to Mexico. Males are about 53 cm (about 21 in) long and may weigh as much as 1.7 kg (3.75 lb); females are slightly smaller.

Scientific classification: The canvasback belongs to the family Anatidae. It is classified as Aythya valisineria. The redhead is classified as Aythya americana.
