Isle of Skye

Isle of Skye, island, northwestern Scotland, the largest of the Inner Hebrides, separated from the mainland by a narrow channel. Skye is 1,680 sq km (650 sq mi) in area and mostly mountainous, rising to a height of 1,009 m (3,309 ft) in the Cuillin Hills. The chief occupations are fishing and sheep and cattle raising. A popular tourist resort, Skye is the site of the castle of the Macleods, which was erected during the 9th century. The capital of the island is Portree.
