Cumberland (county, England)
Encyclopedia Article
Cumberland (county, England), former country, northwestern England, on the Scottish border; Carlisle was the county town. Cumberland comprised an area dominated by the Cumbrian Mountains. The region was on the northern frontier of Roman occupation and was protected by Hadrian's Wall. In the 7th century it was included in the kingdom of Northumbria and later was invaded by the Scandinavians. Cumberland suffered from border warfare from the 10th to the 12th century, when it was incorporated into England. In 1974 Cumberland became part of the new county of Cumbria.
