West Yorkshire, metropolitan county, northern England; Wakefield is the administrative center. West Yorkshire has a terrain dominated by the Pennine Chain; lowland areas occur in the east. Since the 19th century the area has been known for its wool manufacturing. Leeds is the chief commercial and industrial center. Coal mining is important and agriculture is diversified. West Yorkshire was created in 1974 from part of the former West Riding of Yorkshire (see Yorkshire).
